We start consulting about the Station Road area...

Can we improve Station Road?

Radyr and Morganstown Community Council, along with our excellent County Councillor, Rod McKerlich, have been working with Cardiff Council to develop a number of ideas with regard to road safety and highway improvements across our community. Indeed, Cllr McKerlich has been working hard on many of these ideas for many years with considerable success.

This work has resulted in the proposals to build three new zebra crossings along our main road; the closure of Golf Club Lane to traffic; proposals to install a section of pavement on Windsor Road - and, of course, Cardiff Council has recently consulted on its proposal to introduce a 20mph speed limit throughout Radyr and Morganstown (apart from Parc Radur, which will be included in a separate scheme, in due course).

We have also discussed, with Cardiff, possible improvements to the Station Road area. To this end, we have agreed to present Cardiff with ideas which could improve road safety at this location, whilst also improving Station Road's role as one of our community hubs.

In doing so, we are mindful of the fact that changes to the area would depend on Cardiff Council having funds available to undertake the work. Those funds could come from Plasdwr Section 106 money, or from other sources - but nothing can be guaranteed at this stage.

Even so, we see our role as presenting Cardiff Council with a vision for Station Road. It will be for Cardiff to decide whether or not to implement it.

We have today, therefore, invited residents and businesses located on, or near, Station Road, Windsor Crescent, King's Road and King's Avenue to respond to a number of ideas developed by the Community Council. These relate mainly to those roads  - as well as the approach to Radyr Station.

The proposals deal with parking, possible one-way systems, the use of Station Road by the community - and pedestrian safety near Radyr Station.

Our initial survey has been sent only to residents and businesses directly affected by the proposal. Depending on the outcome of the initial survey (which closes at the end of February), we will then consider arranging a wider survey for Radyr and Morganstown residents.

NB: If you live on any of the relevant streets, but haven't received a letter from us, please contact our office.

As always, we will keep you posted.

Update (3 March): the survey is now closed.

Make it one way

We have lived on Station Road for 40 years- we live in lower Station road almost opposite Cwrt Brynteg. Station Road should be made one way but there should be a pedestrian crossing just before Windsor Crescent to stop cars speeding down to the station and to offer safe crossing to children and the elderly. Personally we would welcome a ‘sleeping policeman’ just at the junction of Kings Ave and our bit of the road- getting out of our cul de sac is often dangerous as lorries and cars pick up speed to the station. We would ,however firmly oppose the closure of Station Road at any time for several reasons:
1 the residents in this bit of the road are mostly elderly and we rely on ease of access for ambulances and emergency vehicles over 24 hrs.
2. The road is not solely commercial, nor is it solely a cafe area. Many people are residents and have been for many years.
3. The idea that you can close Station Road periodically and create a one-way system around adjoining narrow residential roads without severely impacting on the lives of those of us who live here is ludicrous.
3. The shops on Station Road are constantly required for short visits by the elderly, carers, and the disabled. Parking close to the Chemist, Co-op, Optician, Post Office is essential to their wellbeing.
4. Ad hoc arrangements for ‘sometime’ closures couldn’t be policed - witness all the dangerous illegal parking on the double yellows at the entrance with Heol Isaf.. not to mention the number of young and agile individuals who park on the disabled space because ‘I’ll only be a minute, love’!
Finally- the road IS busy and dangerous and it does need to be better managed with a crossing for pedestrians and some sensible parking arrangements. The volume of cars is set to increase dramatically in the next few years- and while I wholeheartedly challenge the ridiculous proposed ‘map’ sent around to us as residents, I also applaud the Community Council for recognising the problem!

Thank you for your comments, Pauline. Lots of very useful ideas there - which we will consider carefully as we take this work forward. I'm sorry that the map was ridiculous! But I hope it got people thinking! Best wishes. Huw

Station Road should be one way, with all traffic flowing towards the station.

Definitely make Station Rd one way, stop traffic parking on Windsor crescent illegally - the cars park right to the junction with Station Rd making it difficult to see. Improve the bottom of kings road to make it safer for turning out of.
More parking spaces needed however, how can businesses operate if no parking available?

I believe station road should be a one way system along with a wider path leading down to the Train station to reduce the risk of an accident as pedestrians have to move to the road to allow anyone walking towards them to pass.

I have suggested pedestrianisation before but making the Park in Windsor Rd a Car park, this could be extended across the end of Windsor Rd making Windsor Rd a dead end. The Park as is could then be moved to the Monument Area with one of the 2 legs of Kings Rd utilised to extend the Grassed area around the Monument.

One way could work, but I will say that making it one way will cause trouble on the junction of kings avenue and kings road. This is a really nasty junction.
I wonder whether some sort of diagonal parking on just one side of the road might work well. Making use of church carpark seems a good idea though.

Station road should be made one way to all traffic Safer for pedestrians in crossing the road.
What about resident permit parking the money generated could help in our local community

It is great that the Community Council has started to ‘consult’ and recognise that the traffic issues in and around Station Road need to be looked at. However, they really should have consulted more widely before producing the document that was only sent to those areas they felt to be directly affected.
As a resident of Windsor Crescent, I see shocking examples of driving and parking on a daily basis. But one-way recommendations on Windsor Crescent will not decrease the volume of traffic and will lead to an increase in speed.
Recommendations to shut off Station Road on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday night would leave only Windsor Crescent as an access point to Station Road - surely not something all the shops would be pleased with!
Leaving only 2 access points onto Heol Isaf instead of four will create chaos, particularly with people exiting from the station.
We all benefit from the shops on Station Road. But I do feel that enforcement of existing parking restrictions on Station Road would be a better starting point before the Community Council start rewriting the local ‘map’.
Better consultation is needed so that residents are not forgotten in the promotion of a local ‘hub.’
A huge thank you to the RMA for allowing the concerns of residents to be voiced in a friendly and constructive environment. Come on Community Council - involve us rather than blindsiding us with drastic plans that appear in our homes out of the blue!!
