Radyr Women's Institute was established in 1957 and is well established in the community. In addition to its monthly meetings it has monthly book groups, genealogy and a weekly walking group. It organises a variety of visits, outings and meals out throughout the year and aims to have something for everyone, whatever their interest. Some of the events are organised by the Glamorgan Federation of Women’s Institutes and are an opportunity to meet women from other WIs.
Meetings are held at 7.30pm on the second Monday of the month in the Old Church Rooms. Meetings follow a similar format each month – WI business (which is kept to a minimum) followed by a talk, demonstration or presentation from an invited speaker; raffle and social time.
The subscription for 2019 is £42 or £20.50 if you are a dual member (a member of more than one WI).
The programme for 2019 can be seen here - and all visitors are always welcome.
Other events for 2019 include:

What is Tenovus Cancer Care?
Tenovus Cancer Care is Wales’ leading cancer charity; its aims are to prevent, treat and fund research to improve cancer outcomes and to bring cancer care into the community. The world’s most successful breast cancer drug was developed by Tenovus scientists in Cardiff. The Charity’s unique Mobile Cancer Support Units offer patient services in Welsh communities in many ways, including treatment delivered by specialist NHS nurses. Please visit www.tenovuscancercare org.uk for more information.
After a visit, by a member of the staff of Tenovus, to the WI in 1985, several WI members were inspired to form the Radyr and Morganstown Friends of Tenovus Group, since then we have been helped and supported by many people who live in our community.
What have the R&M Friends of Tenovus Cancer Care achieved?
The Group has raised over £300,000 over the last 30+years and with the magnificent support, which is received from many generous members of our community our events continue to help fund the marvellous work of the Charity.
We have enjoyed organising, with the kind help of others, Coffee Mornings, Strawberry Teas, Sponsored Walks, Golf Days, Concert Suppers, Quiz Nights, an Open Garden Day, Mulled Wine Festive Events, Theatre Trips and Literary Lunches. We are invited by the Radyr Drama Group to sell refreshments during their productions. The sales of cards, along with donations, from many members of our community, help enormously. We also organise a collection of goods for sale in the Tenovus C.C shops. We hope that you will enjoy looking at the pictures of past events in the gallery, where you may spot yourself, family members or friends. We look forward to seeing old friends and to welcome new supporters at our events planned for 2019.
Can I help?
The events, which have been many and varied over the years, are wonderful ways to make contact with friends and neighbours within our community with the added satisfaction and bonus of helping, through the Charity, those who are affected by cancer. All are welcome to join us in our efforts to support the Charity.
Events planned for 2019
The Group is very pleased to report that the R and M Association Committee has decided that Tenovus Care Care will be the adopted Charity for 2019 – 2020.
All Group members look forward to working with the R and M Association.
The aim of the Group is to continue to organise fundraising events, but also to provide a regular income to the Charity, which would be invaluable for future planning. To that end a scheme has been set up with a local supermarket, whereby a supporter of the Charity will be rewarded with 4.2% of any amount he/she spends in the supermarket to be donated to the Friends of Tenovus Group in Radyr and Morganstown. For example if a supporter spends £100 per month on food/petrol/other supplies in the supermarket, then the Friends Group will receive £4.20. £50 spend will result in £2.10 donation.
This supermarket card scheme is already providing a regular annual income, by local supporters of the Charity, and we are hopeful that many more people will realise that it is an exceptional way to help ( with no cost whatsoever to the shopper). To become part of this easy way to help the Charity to continue with vital programmes at NO COST to you, but of great benefit to others, please ring Rosanne on 20401872.
Who can I contact?
The current committee is chaired by Rosanne Holmes (Tel. 20401872) with Betty Fitzgerald as Secretary (Tel 20842096) and Marilyn Vaughan as Treasurer. The other members include Lucille Sharp, Alison Skidmore, Maggie Roberts,Sara Dove, Liz Pexton, Philippa Hallinan and Sheila Phillips. Please ring either of the above numbers if you have any questions about the Friends of Tenovus Cancer Care Group, or if you would like to know how you could help.
A chance to enjoy meeting other photographers and to exchange information and ideas that will help produce images that please members and, when entered into a competition, others too. The club has members who are professionals, some who are very talented amateurs and others who are enthusiastic novices – so whatever your level of skill, you will not feel out of place. The club holds an exhibition of photographs during the R&M Festival in May.
The club meets once a month, in the evening, on the first Tuesdays between September and April. It meets at the Old Church Rooms (and at outside locations for a club photo-shoots). You can obtain the dates of the club's meetings from the Chairman, David Cargill, on 029 2084 2034 or at email@example.com
Membership costs £5 per year plus £2 for attending club meetings, to cover the cost of the room.
A warm welcome is offered to all new members of all ages.
The next events are:
2 April: David Cargill 'Old Radyr'
16 April: festival photos
4 May: festival photo competition
17 May: audio visual night.
Photographs taken by club members can be viewed here.
The Radyr Drama Society was formed in 1982 by a group of enthusiasts living in Radyr and Morganstown. It performed its first play – ‘All in Good Time‘ by Bill Naughton – in May the following year. The group thrives entirely on the goodwill, hard work and support of its members, helpers and audiences
Agatha Christie’s “Spiders Web” has been selected for April 2019. Rehearsals begin on January 14th for this thrilling Murder Mystery.
You can see details of past productions here.
Our recent productions have been well received and continue to add to the list of successful productions staged by the society. However, as in many spheres, there is a constant turnover of members and the group is constantly on the lookout for both for new acting talent and people interested in theatre ready to play a backstage role in a variety of ways such as dress making, costume design, set design, building and decoration, stage management, publicity, lighting and sound. On performance nights we also need front of house staff. Actors of all ages and sex are welcome. Recently, we have found that students following a course of study in the performing arts find it useful to get experience ‘on the ground’ via Am-Dram
New members who wish to take part or help off stage are very welcomeIf you’d like to get involved, get in touch without delay.
